9 DPO: Median Implantation Day and Early Test Odds

Halfway between "too early" and "worth a try".

Day 9 of the two-week wait, drawn as a growing plant

Quick answer

At 9 DPO, many pregnancies are implanting: day 9 is the median implantation day in NIH data. Median urine hCG was about 4 mIU/mL in a daily study, below the roughly 5.5 mIU/mL the most sensitive home tests detect. A positive is possible, but a 9 DPO negative is common in pregnancies that continue.

Key takeaways

  • Day 9 after ovulation is the median day of implantation in naturally conceived pregnancies.
  • Median urine hCG at 9 DPO was 4.04 mIU/mL; 90% of pregnancies were below 11.32 mIU/mL.
  • A very sensitive test may be positive in fewer than half of pregnancies at 9 DPO; a standard strip in fewer than 1 in 10.
  • Brand claims like "5 days before your expected period" count back from your period, so they match different DPO for different people.

Nine days past ovulation is often the first day people seriously consider testing. It is also the median day of implantation, which means that for many pregnancies, hCG is only just appearing. This page lays out the numbers so you can decide whether a 9 DPO test is worth it, and what to make of the result.

What happens at 9 DPO

In the NIH daily-urine study of naturally conceived pregnancies, implantation ranged from 6 to 12 days after ovulation, with a median of 9 days and a mean of 9.1.1 So if there is a pregnancy, there is a good chance the embryo is implanting today or did so in the last day or two.

When hCG first appears, it is at levels only a research assay can detect. From there it rises about threefold the next day and roughly doubles each day for several days after.1

9 DPO symptoms

At 9 DPO, symptoms are still mostly the luteal phase talking. Breast tenderness, bloating, tiredness and cramping come from progesterone, which has been high for several days. hCG is usually too low at 9 DPO to cause symptoms of its own. Having none is just as normal as having many.

Can you get a positive pregnancy test at 9 DPO?

Sometimes, but not usually. In daily first-morning urine samples from 109 women who conceived, median hCG at 9 DPO was 4.04 mIU/mL, with 10% below 0.19 and 10% above 11.32 mIU/mL.2 In a 2011 lab comparison, the most sensitive home tests detected about 5.5 mIU/mL and others needed about 22 mIU/mL.5 Our reading of those numbers:

  • A very sensitive test may be positive in fewer than half of pregnancies at 9 DPO.
  • A standard test or strip may be positive in fewer than 1 in 10.

9 DPO BFN

A negative at 9 DPO is therefore the most common result in pregnancies that continue. The FDA says testing too early can give a false negative and suggests retesting after several days if you still think you might be pregnant.6 Waiting makes a large difference: median hCG in the same daily data was about 12 mIU/mL at 10 DPO and 25 mIU/mL at 11 DPO.2

What "5 days before your expected period" means at 9 DPO

First Response says that in its laboratory testing, its Early Result test detected the pregnancy hormone in 76% of pregnant women 5 days before their expected period, 96% at 4 days before, and over 99% from 3 days before.3 Those figures are counted back from the period, not forward from ovulation. How many days that is after ovulation depends on your luteal phase, which averaged 12.4 days in a large app dataset, with most between 7 and 17 days.4

The brand's percentages come from its own lab work, and independent day-by-day data counted from ovulation look less optimistic. Both are useful; they just measure different things.

9 DPO and implantation

Spotting or a twinge today may coincide with implantation, but neither confirms it. Our implantation bleeding guide and the page on implantation bleeding and pregnancy tests cover what spotting can and cannot tell you about when to test.

What to do now

If you test today, test well. Use first-morning urine, which the FDA notes usually has more hCG, and a highly sensitive test.6 Save cheaper strips for later in the wait.

If you get a negative, treat it as "not yet". Plan to retest in two or three days. The DPO calculator shows when your period is due.

Look after yourself. Early negatives are hard. See coping with the two-week wait. Next: 10 DPO. And if this cycle doesn't work out, track smarter next time.

Frequently asked questions

Yes. A negative at 9 DPO is expected in many pregnancies that go on to continue. In daily urine samples from 109 women who conceived, median hCG at 9 DPO was 4.04 mIU/mL, which is below what even the most sensitive home tests detect. Retest in two or three days if your period has not started.

No study gives one exact figure for home tests at 9 DPO. Daily urine data suggest that fewer than half of pregnancies have hCG above about 5.5 mIU/mL at 9 DPO, and fewer than 1 in 10 are above 22 mIU/mL. Brand figures counted from the expected period can look higher.

Yes, and it is the single most typical day. An analysis of 142 pregnancies from the NIH daily-urine study found implantation ranged from 6 to 12 days after ovulation, with a median of 9 and a mean of 9.1 days. hCG becomes detectable in a lab assay only around then.

Breast tenderness, bloating, cramping, tiredness and mood changes are common at 9 DPO in pregnant and non-pregnant cycles, driven mainly by progesterone. hCG at 9 DPO is usually too low to cause noticeable symptoms. Not having symptoms is also normal.

If you can wait, waiting gives a much clearer answer. Median hCG roughly triples from 9 to 10 DPO and doubles again by 11 DPO in daily urine data. If you do test at 9 DPO, use a highly sensitive test with first-morning urine and treat a negative as "not yet".
