10 DPO: When Early Tests Start to Have a Real Chance
The first day a sensitive test is more likely than not to find a pregnancy.

Ten days past ovulation is the day many early-testing guides point to, and for good reason: it is the first day a highly sensitive test is more likely than not to pick up a pregnancy. It is also a day of many negatives that later turn positive. This page explains what the data show, which test you would need, and how to read what you see.
What happens at 10 DPO
In the NIH daily-urine study, 84% of continuing pregnancies implanted on day 8, 9 or 10 after ovulation, with a few on days 11 and 12.6 So if you are pregnant, implantation has most likely happened, and hCG has been rising for a day or more. In daily urine data, median hCG roughly doubled each day between 10 and 12 DPO, which is why the next few days change the picture so quickly.1
10 DPO symptoms
Most 10 DPO symptoms are still driven by progesterone: breast tenderness, bloating, mild cramping, tiredness. Some people do start to notice early pregnancy changes around now, but they are the minority. In a prospective study, half of women who went on to have a baby first noticed symptoms by day 36 after their last period started, which is well after 10 DPO.7 Having no symptoms today is normal.
Can you get a positive pregnancy test at 10 DPO?
Yes, often, if the test is sensitive enough. In daily urine samples from 109 women who conceived, median hCG at 10 DPO was 12.23 mIU/mL, and the middle 80% of pregnancies ranged from 3.92 to 27.01 mIU/mL.1 What that means depends on the test:
| Test sensitivity | Example from lab studies | Likely share positive at 10 DPO (our reading) |
|---|---|---|
| About 5.5 mIU/mL | First Response tests in a 2011 comparison2 | More than half |
| About 6.3 mIU/mL | The two most sensitive of 15 tests in 20013 | More than half |
| About 22–25 mIU/mL | Many standard tests in 2001 and 201123 | Roughly 1 in 10 |
The 2001 study found detection limits ranging from 6.3 to 50 mIU/mL across 15 home tests, so "pregnancy test" covers a wide range of sensitivity.3
Faint lines at 10 DPO
At 10 DPO, a positive is often faint, because hCG is low. Reading faint lines is harder than it sounds. In a study of 111 volunteers, people disagreed with the study coordinator's reading in 40% of strip results and 30% of cassette results, compared with under 3% for digital or easy-read tests.4 The study was run by a test maker, but the lesson holds: if you see a faint line, retest in two days rather than trusting your eyes once. Always read within the time window in the instructions.
10 DPO BFN
A negative at 10 DPO is common in pregnancies that continue, especially with a standard strip. The FDA says a negative result is "a tentative finding" and recommends retesting after several days if you still think you are pregnant.5
10 DPO and implantation
Spotting around 10 DPO may or may not be linked to implantation, and our implantation bleeding guide explains what research shows. If you think you had implantation spotting, see implantation bleeding and pregnancy tests for testing advice.
What to do now
Check your dates. If your ovulation day is an estimate, 10 DPO may really be 8 or 12. Use the calculator to see your window.
Test with first-morning urine and a sensitive test, as the FDA notes it usually has more hCG.5
Plan your retest now, so a negative feels like a step rather than an answer. Our guide on how many days after ovulation you can test helps, and so does coping with the two-week wait. Next: 11 DPO. Not pregnant this cycle? See how to track smarter next cycle.
