11 DPO: About Half of Pregnancies Reach 25 mIU/mL

A much better day to test, though not yet a final answer.

Day 11 of the two-week wait, drawn as a growing plant

Quick answer

At 11 DPO, median urine hCG was about 25 mIU/mL in a daily study of women who conceived. A highly sensitive test is likely to be positive in more than 9 in 10 pregnancies, while a standard 22 to 25 mIU/mL test catches about half. An 11 DPO negative still does not rule out pregnancy.

Key takeaways

  • Median urine hCG at 11 DPO was 25.04 mIU/mL; 90% of pregnancies were above 9.47 mIU/mL.
  • A sensitive test (about 5.5 mIU/mL) has a high chance today; a standard strip is closer to a coin toss.
  • Some pregnancies implant on day 11 or 12, and later implantation means a later positive.
  • If your period has not arrived, a negative today means retest, not give up.

Eleven days past ovulation is a turning point in the data. It is the day median urine hCG in pregnant women reaches about 25 mIU/mL, the level many standard tests are built around. That makes an 11 DPO test far more informative than one taken a few days earlier, but it is not the final word. Here is how to read today's result.

What happens at 11 DPO

If you are pregnant, implantation has most likely happened, and hCG has been rising for one to three days. Most continuing pregnancies in the NIH daily-urine study implanted on day 8, 9 or 10, but some implanted as late as day 12.3 hCG keeps the corpus luteum going, which keeps progesterone up and holds off your period.6

If you are not pregnant, the corpus luteum breaks down about 14 days after ovulation, and your period follows.6

11 DPO symptoms

Symptoms at 11 DPO overlap almost completely between early pregnancy and an approaching period. Breast tenderness, cramps, tiredness and moodiness are common in both. Some people notice nothing at all and are pregnant; others feel every possible sign and are not. A test is far more informative than any symptom today.

Can you get a positive pregnancy test at 11 DPO?

Yes, in many pregnancies. In daily first-morning urine samples from 109 women who conceived, median hCG at 11 DPO was 25.04 mIU/mL, and the middle 80% ranged from 9.47 to 57.82 mIU/mL.1 Set against the sensitivities measured in a 2011 lab comparison, about 5.5 mIU/mL for the most sensitive tests and about 22 mIU/mL for others:2

  • A sensitive test is likely to be positive in more than 9 in 10 pregnancies at 11 DPO.
  • A standard test is likely to be positive in about half.

These are our readings of the study's centiles. Real-world results also depend on urine concentration and how the line is read.

11 DPO BFN

If you get a negative today, three explanations are common and none of them mean the cycle is over. hCG may still be below your test's threshold. Your ovulation may have been a day or two later than you think. Or implantation may have been late. The FDA advises retesting after several days if you still think you might be pregnant.5

11 DPO and late implantation

Late implantation matters for timing, and the research also links it with outcomes. Researchers who followed 221 women found that hCG rose more slowly in pregnancies that implanted after 10 days.4 They also found that the chance of an early loss, before 6 weeks after the last period, rose with later implantation:3

Day of implantation after ovulationShare ending in early loss
By day 913%
Day 1026%
Day 1152%
After day 1182%

These figures describe the study group as a whole, not any one pregnancy, and you cannot know your implantation day from home. About half of the pregnancies that implanted on day 11 continued. What to do now

Use first-morning urine and a sensitive test if testing before your period; the FDA notes morning urine usually has more hCG.5

If it is negative, retest in two days or on the day your period is due. The DPO calculator shows that date, and our guide on how many days after ovulation you can test explains the timing.

Be gentle with yourself. This is often the most emotional point of the wait. Our page on coping with the two-week wait can help. Next: 12 DPO. If this cycle doesn't work out, track smarter so your next DPO count is more precise.

Frequently asked questions

It is less common than at 9 or 10 DPO but still normal, especially with a standard test. In daily urine data, about half of pregnancies were below 25 mIU/mL at 11 DPO, and 10% were below 9.47 mIU/mL. Late implantation or a miscounted ovulation day can also delay a positive.

It depends on the test. With a test that detects about 5.5 mIU/mL, daily urine data suggest more than 9 in 10 pregnancies would show a positive at 11 DPO. With a test that needs about 22 to 25 mIU/mL, the figure is closer to half. A positive is reliable; a negative is not yet final.

Yes, though it is less common. In the NIH study of 221 women, implantation in continuing pregnancies ranged up to 12 days after ovulation, and most happened on days 8 to 10. Later implantations were also linked with slower hCG rises, which can delay a positive test by a few days.

Cramps at 11 DPO are common in both pregnant and non-pregnant cycles. For some people they are the start of premenstrual cramping as the period nears, and for others they happen in early pregnancy. They cannot tell the two apart, but a test in a day or two can.
